A 74-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 2 south of Edmonton.

The Edmonton Police Service was called to the scene of the collision on Calgary Trail and 41 Avenue S.W. at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Traffic section investigators say the man was operating a 2005 Ford Escape approaching the 41 Avenue S.W. underpass in the far left lane, when he lost control of the vehicle. The Ford Escape veered off the road and struck a support pillar of the overpass, police said in a news release. The 74-year-old succumbed to his injuries on scene.

Police shut down a section of QEII at 41st Avenue S.W. after the collision in the southbound lanes.

The section of road, about 15 kilometres away from the Edmonton International Airport, was expected to be closed into the night as police conducted a full investigation.

All traffic was being diverted through the overpass on 41st Avenue to continue southbound, with police recommending that people heading toward the Edmonton International Airport take another route if possible.
